What Should I Consider Before Converting?

Does a Loft Conversion Require Planning Permission?

Loft conversions are generally covered under permitted development as there is no change to the existing footprint of your home. However there are a number of specified parameters that you may need to adhere to.

Garage conversions will usually fall under permitted development as well- particularly if you’re not altering the actual structure. Although it is always advisable to check with your local council, as sometimes conditions may be attached to the garage such as it may have to remain as parking. You would often be able to apply to have these conditions removed if necessary. Other considerations may be a change of use particularly if the garage is a separate, stand alone building

Building Regulations

As usual when a habitable room is being made then building regulations will always be required whether or not planning permission is. What are they? Well… simply put they ensure that the conversion or any work your have done are of a standard required by your local council to be made habitable and adhere to latest regulations such as energy efficiency, ventilation etc. Many people are daunted by this but think of it as a very welcome service to make sure your investment is being built well and will stand the test of time.
